27th June 2006 - Kings Theatre

Masters of Ceremonies Announced

Local students, Aaron Steadman and Ross Cobbold will act as the Masters of Ceremonies at a major new initiative at the Kings Theatre. On June 27th (England football team are not scheduled to play that day) six local schools, including Hayling College, will stage a wonderful evenings entertainment, called Midsummer Music Madness at the theatre in Southsea. The evening will include a huge variety  and styles of music and dance, some of which was on display at the launch of this initiative by the Mayor last month.

Aaron and Ross are experienced in the role for which they have been selected and are thrilled at the opportunity to showcase their talents in a major theatre in the south. The two do not simply read from a prewritten text, but play off one another with a huge sense of fun, with the only objective being to increase the enjoyment of the audience.

Both pupils are about to take their GCSE examinations at the Hayling College, and have a real passion for the world of drama  and music, not just going to the theatre but making a huge contribution to it. Both boys are full of praise for the Music and drama departments at their school, where Aaron is the captain of drama and Ross captain of aesthetics. The boys feel that their skills and talents are wisely encouraged  and hope to take forward their enthusiasms when they go on to South Downs College to study for a B. Tech in musical theatre.

Aaron runs a small production team and made a huge contribution to the production of  Cabaret  and the Sound of Music at college, whilst Ross is a very active member of the Dynamo Youth group based at Havant Arts Centre. Just talking to these lads, their sheer enthusiasm and excitement is palpable.

Music Festival launched by The Mayor

Midsummer Music Madness a concert celebrating the musical talents of students from Schools in the Havant area was officially launched on the 27th April by Mayor Councilor Cyril Hilton.

The launch will took place at the Civic Offices at Havant. Students from Park Community School presented a taster of the show on the evening. They were led by John Gleadall from Park School who has agreed to be be Musical Director for the concert.

The show is sponsored by The Rotary Club of Havant in conjunction with The South East Hampshire Schools Federation.

This is the first major event that the Federation schools have participated in together. Musical Director John Gleadall said "This is an excellent opportunity to showcase the student's skills as well as bringing the schools and students together. Personally I would also like to say that I am delighted to resurrect the concept of joint music making between the school - this first happened in
the 1950's and petered out some years ago when teachers found that they were so pressured that they no longer had time to organise the event - without the help of the Rotary organisation the idea of a joint music festival would have remained moribund - so thanks!!"

Havant Rotary President, Myles Cullen said " We are delighted to be working with the schools and to be promoting and sponsoring this concert. We hope that it will grow into an annual event. It is important to celebrate the talent that is in our Schools"
